Obese Children May Find A Ray of Hope in Probiotic Supplements

About 1 trillion microbes nicely live in the gastrointestinal tract. Probiotics are live bacteria that we can consume and improve the 1 trillion microbes’ nature for our benefits, be it weight loss, or maintaining an optimum level of weight or even weight gain.

As most of the absorption occurs at the gastrointestinal level, probiotics have a major role in being a part of the weight loss regimen. Study shows, obese children, children already having crossed the normal body mass index (BMI), may lose weight through the consumption of probiotic supplements.

A trial was conducted in China, wherein more than 50 obese children aged between 6 and 14 were studied for the action of the probiotic supplements. Out of 50, 30 were given the probiotic supplements containing probiotic capsules, and 24 were given a placebo (control group) for about 12 weeks. They were also told to increase physical activity and have a diet of reduced calorie intake. There were markers along with the BMI, namely blood glucose levels, insulin levels, inflammatory markers, body weights, and blood lipid levels. These markers only increase when there’s obesity or increased adipose tissue content in the body.

The obese kids showed to have reduced their body mass index significantly due to the consumption of probiotic supplements. The markers were observed to have shown improvement (lowered levels) post-consumption of probiotic supplements given to obese children. Oxidative stress, a term used for stress at the cellular level, too, showed improvement.

This became the first study conducted on obese children to know the effect of probiotic supplements over lipopolysaccharide-binding protein present in obese children.

A more extensive study needs to be planned

Since the study conducted by the China team involved only 50 plus children, they are yet to plan for an extensive study consisting of a greater number of children, so as to confirm their study. Some studies also showed no effect of probiotic supplementation over obese children. Hence, an extensive study and research are still needed in this field of experimentation. They also observed that the probiotic effect supplements caused in obese children lasted only for a short duration of time.

Obesity, be it in children or adults, comes with its relatives, namely type 2 diabetes mellitus and heart disease. Probiotic supplements seem to have the power to control the weight of a child or an adult, and subsequently cut down their risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes mellitus along with grave heart diseases like atherosclerosis, ischaemic heart disease, and acute coronary syndrome.

Good and bad bacteria?

Bacteria, known better for being a villain to our lives, actually come in two forms, the bad bacteria we acquire from pathogens or harmful agents and good bacteria, which are actually beneficial for us to function physiologically.

In our body, there are thousands and thousands of good and bad bacteria which maintain a good equilibrium. Once this equilibrium gets altered, disease results or sets in. To keep the bad bacteria in check, we need to increase the number of good bacteria in our body. To increase the population of good bacteria, we need to take the help of the probiotic supplements.

Probiotics, if we go deeper to dig their uses, we come to know that they are used to help deal with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, weak intestinal condition post heavy drugging in case of chronic diseases like Tuberculosis, skin conditions like eczema and the common allergic cold.

Now, how is a child going to benefit from the probiotic supplementation?

Children develop probiotics in the womb and throughout their early childhood. According to a survey, probiotics are used as the third natural product by children. Since childhood obesity is a growing problem, and it needs early intervention to prevent future health problems revolving around the heart and pancreas.

Childhood obesity is resulting from more dependency on technology for indoor and outdoor games, school, or a lack of friend circle to play with. It also stems from excessive junk food consumption and developing a dislike of healthy foods.

According to a recent study, they say 1 in 5 children is supposed to be afflicted with childhood obesity leading to overweight issues and proneness to heart disease and diabetes mellitus.

Another recent study suggests that by the year 2020, more than half of the children reaching secondary high school will be obese or overweight. The causes could be due to an unhealthy lifestyle, and immobility due to overdependence on technology.

Before saying yes to any probiotic supplementation, it is beneficial to take your primary doctor’s consultation. Probiotics may or may not help your child. Depending upon the requirement of your child, you need to consult your child’s pediatrician. Before you do visit your doctor, prepare a list of questions to need to know about. The questions may contain probiotic supplement’s brand name, benefits, indications for your child, dosage, duration, contraindications, and in case you don’t see any effects when to stop taking them.

Since the long-term effects of probiotic supplements are not known, it is advisable to give them to your child after your doctor’s recommendation.

For some children, it may tackle obesity. For some, it may deal with allergies like the common cold, and for some, it may help the child get rid of eczema. In some children, relief from diarrhea, constipation, acid reflux, and colicky pain in the abdomen was also observed due to probiotic supplementation.

It is advisable to fall for natural probiotics like yogurt than going for supplemental probiotics. To make it more interesting for your child, you could blend yogurt with fruit and make a smoothie out of it. You could also use yogurt in place of jam or mayonnaise in a sandwich.

Just in the last few months, health campaigners were urging to apply ‘calorie tax’ to the organizations which produced processed foods with high-fat calorie and high-sugar calorie indexes, thus making them process healthier foods.

As such medical recommendations are not to be made since full discovery over probiotic supplements is yet to be made. One may depend on natural probiotics till then!

A Cure for Depression that Might Surprise You

The number of clinically depressed adults is at an all-time high and is only expected to rise as millennials make their way to adulthood. World Health Organization (WHO) reported as of March 2018 that 300 million people around the world were suffering from the disease and named it the number one cause of suicide, the second leading cause of death in those aged 15 – 29 years old.

As technology advances and social connections disappear, humankind is becoming a colder race, unable to make proper connections with humans and supplementing that with an AI companion.

This lack of human social interaction is to blame, and at the root of it is social media, used by 88% of millennials from recent reports. The connection of social media and depression continues to unfold, revealing the dangers that come along with it. Instant gratification, constant comparisons, and a ton of weight are placed on the shoulders of these young adults, leaving some of them unconfident and unsure about themselves, directly effecting their relationship with others. One metal health therapist, Jessica Singh, from Transcendence Counseling Center, reported to Healthline, “Millennials are feeling the pressure always to look and act like they have it all together. This can easily result in lowered self-esteem, anxiety, or depression”. With this dire of a situation, medical professionals and those suffering from the disorder have begun to search for other means to overcome or manage depressions, and the number one suggestion may surprise you, exercise.

The Battel of Depression

The thing that makes managing depression difficult is the lack of energy that comes along with it. It affects everything, leaving those in their worst state unable to move, unable to think, and unable to be. This is because his feelings of sadness and disconnectedness lead directly to a lack of sleep or sleeping too much. This, in response, changes the body’s appetite, which affects the organs and the brain immensely. Collectively, these lead to less energy, which can completely wipe out the will to exercise. The last thing that people suffering from a low episode want to do is be active, but the battle is worth it at the end. There is no cure for depression. The most common form of treatment is a cocktail of medications that may take years to perfect to stabilize the body’s chemistry. However, with exercise, the same effects happen naturally, without the risk of side effects.

How Exercising Can Help

It is now common knowledge that exercise is a great way to battle just about anything. On the surface level, setting goals and accomplishing them leads to a happier demeanor and a sense of achievement. Regular exercise sheds pounds and adds muscle, instantly creating a more positive self-image that can work wonders on the mood and the mind. Internally, the release of endorphins after some feel-good moves comes with mood-boosting abilities while neurotrophic proteins grow nerve cells, creating new and improved connections in the process. This is why it is important to exercise regularly, as the more often and longer duration, the better the effects on depression.

A good intense workout has immediate relaxing and stress relief benefits. This is because of the release of toxins thanks to sweat produced as a response from increased body temperature. The muscles will be put to work, giving them more of an opportunity to relax and ease into a tranquil state when they are not activated. Regular exercise improves sleep, balancing out the body’s hormone levels, and creating a concoction to rest with ease and fall easier into deep and restorative REM sleep. Sleep improves the mood, and an improved mood will help bring some hope into darker times. This is easier said than done, but studies have shown that even just 10 to 15 minutes every day can help better manage the effects of depression.

What Exercises Are Best?

There is no such thing as a bad workout for managing depression, every little bit of activity can have a positive effect. But, these three below are the top that have been proven to boost mood and balance out the body’s chemistry in the process.

HIIT

These types of workouts require a combination of muscles, both large and small. They are called to work together at a faster pace for a short amount of time, usually with a small break in between each move. Workouts of this kind increase the heart rate, which increases body temperature and produces sweat. This is an equation for happiness, leaving those that have made it through a HIIT workout feeling strong, positive, confident, and wore out. The best thing is, the effects can be seen from even a 5-minute HIIT round, making it a perfect stepping stone to start getting out of the rut depression puts sufferers in.

Running

We have all heard of ‘runners high,’ the sensation felt during a run where a new and improved burst of energy helps us power through to the end. This same sensation can work wonders on those who suffer from depression, releasing a concoction of good feelings into the brain. Same an above, even a brisk jog for 5 – 10 minutes can create these mental treats, making it a great way to create a more positive self-image.

Yoga

An intense stretching session can leave the body relaxed and without tensions. With yoga, it is not only about flexibility, but the ability to change the mind and create a more mindful way of living and being. This practice of peace attempts to teach one their place within this earth and show them how to channel and use their energy to create a calmer and more peaceful place all from within.

One Step at a Time

Nothing happens overnight. The most important thing is to listen to the body and give it what it is asking for. Changing the mindset is a process and one that can be difficult and challenging, and may not make sense at the beginning. Adding exercise a few times a week and limiting social media use can aid in this change, and help deal with the lowest of episodes that come from depression. Try it for even just 1 minute a day, and start to notice the more positive changes that appear over time.

Tips To Keeping Fit And Healthy

Have you made your final decision on keeping your body fit and strong? If yes, congratulations on making such a wise and essential decision. It’s absolutely a brave step many haven’t taken yet. Keeping fit isn’t just something you wake up one day and get into. It’s a journey that needs thorough analysis and planning before kicking off.

To some people, keeping fit or getting your body to shape may sound timewasting and quite difficult. Well, it sometimes gets quite challenging, and if you are not well prepared, you may end up giving up along the way. Nevertheless, I am glad you have made your decision and am here to help you with a significant number of simple tips to help you navigate to your fitness success easily.

1 Do regular body exercise

I presume this isn’t a surprise to you at all, so that I couldn’t leave it out of the list. You must do regular body exercises if you wish to keep and get your body fit. Also, getting into shape goes hand in hand with shedding excess body fats. You need to shed off excess body fats to lose weight and get your body a sexy shape. With bodybuilding and muscle building, you need to shed fats for leaner and strong muscles. This is, in most cases, achieved through doing regular body exercise. Body exercise could include pushups, weight lifting, and also jogging. Anything that would help trigger and accelerate your body metabolism process is recommended.

2 Keep track of the number of calories you take

Have you ever wondered why bodybuilders end up having huge body masses? Keeping track of their calorie intake is the prime reason behind the big body masses. Well, I understand you need energy and am not denying you the right to take calories but let it be healthy and well planned. An average person will take calories without any plan at all. That is what differentiates an average person from a serious bodybuilder. If you have been keen on bodybuilders, you should have noticed how massive and lean their muscles look. The secret behind lean and strong muscles is just eating healthy and well-planned calories plus some regular workouts. You will not take fatty foods and still expect your body to be fit and strong. Excess fats will only add weight and make you as weak as never before! This is the right time you should cease prioritizing fatty foods like fries, and plan out your diet well and healthy.

3 Get enough rest

Our bodies operate nearly the same as artificial machines. The only difference is what powers the two, and the maintenance methodologies are quite different. With machines, and especially those which use rechargeable batteries as the power source, will need a recharge after a certain period of operation. In the same way, your body will need it, is kind of recharge after a certain period of working. You don’t expect your body to operate throughout without adequate res. You need to get enough rest. Otherwise, you may end up developing some serious health conditions, which am sure are not in your wish list. Well, the standard rest period is approximated to be between 7 to 9 hours, but the minimum for an adult is 6 hours. Kindly respect your body. When it says, it’s time to rest, do not force it to work through some stimulators like caffeine like most of us do. Working throughout doesn’t mean you are hardworking. No, that is just playing blind on your health. There will always be a tomorrow, so kindly do not overwork your body! Even for the workouts, make sure you set a specific period for your workouts. DO not overdo it. Experts have declared at least 30 minutes of non-stop body exercise every day should be enough for keeping your body fit and in shape!

4 Be keen with the kind and the amount of food you take

Eating alloy of food doesn’t mean you will be strong and fit. In any case, eating too much will make you weak and obese. But eating the right food and in enough portions will have a positive impact on your body wellness. Experts say that fruits and veggies are always the best foods for keeping your body fit. I prefer taking apples every time I need to stay for a long period without taking food. Apples seem to have a very amazing ability to make your stomach feel full and satisfied.

Also, white meat is recommended for its adequate proteins and healthy nutrients. Turkey and chicken would make a great meat food for bodybuilding and keeping fit. Fish foods are also a good alternative for you. Besides, it’s better spread out your meal taking into like 4 to 6 times a day but in small portion than taking a lot of food once or twice a day. Besides, working out under a full stomach feels challenging and difficult.

5 Avoid Alcoholic Drinks and smoking

Drinking alcohol and cigarette smoking are very addictive habits and are linked to adverse and long-term health complications. Above all, smoking is a common cause of cancer. If you are into smoking and you need to stay fit and strong, you need to quit the habit immediately. I know it’s next to impossible, but you can make it if you are determined to keeping well and fit. Many have heeded to this and have witnessed and enjoyed the benefits. Its leisure to drink but take a moment and think about the many negative side effects of alcohol drinking, one of them being overweight and obese. And I said earlier, keeping fit needs a good plan and determination as well. I believe with the two. You can make it to quitting the habit once and for all!

6 Keep a positive mindset

I wanted to present this point as the last because it’s the prime pillar to all the above tips. This will include having self-motive. Once you have a positive mindset towards keeping fit, you will heed to the above tips. Most of those who give up on keeping fit do loose self-motive. Once you deviate from this, you are done! So it’s essential to stay motivated and focused.

Under 35 and Too Self Conscious to go to the Gym

“I’m too fat.” “Everyone will look at me.” “I don’t belong here.” Ever said any of these? Chances are yes. We are all human, after all. But the place where these negative mantras are being voiced might come of surprise, the gym. That’s right, the very place that is supposed to promote a healthy lifestyle and body image is causing the contrary.

What’s worse is that ‘self-conscious’ feeling is transmitted between ages from18 and 35 before ever even stepping foot inside of a gym. How? You might ask. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that yet again another negative trend with social media at the root, this time, one that could have grave consequences in the future. Not only are the trending applications causing negative effects due to bullying and social anxiety, but now, researchers are beginning to note the lack of confidence felt among individuals. Ode to the filter, the best friend to revenge, it makes everyone look amazing yet, we are starting to struggle with the difference between what is real and what is fake. This sets up false expectations and causes people to become much less confident with their bodies as some filtered photos create a hard mold to fit.

Social Media and Gyms are related?

Social media is to blame for a lot of things. As more people join and make accounts and technology advances, seemingly so do the problems. One that is not commonly thought of in association with social media is the gym. What could these two things possibly have in common? According to research conducted by a non-profit health organization in the UK, “one-third of British men and women aged 18-35 surveyed believe that social media is harmful, rather than helpful when it comes to motivating people to get fit.” – The Independent.  A similar study was released from an International Health sports club in Boston, so this is not a regional or continental issue. Those that feel the most self-conscious tend to comment on the unrealistic and filtered photos that many influencers and motivators in the fitness world are so known for.

The age group that was surveyed is the same age group with the most members most commonly active on social media. When they get a surge of motivation, users begin to follow accounts that can get and keep them motivated throughout their journey. The only problem is, most influencers and motivators with the most followers are paid, dedicating their lives to fitness. This, in combination with filters, airbrushing, and lighting, can create seemingly perfect images of their bodies, leaving followers vulnerable to false expectations. This, in turn, creates a domino effect on the negative thoughts the young crowd is having, keeping them away from doing things that are healthy for their bodies.

The group also bought up the fact that selfies during a workout are becoming increasingly more common. This can lead to thoughts of gym-goers, not feeling ‘fit enough’ or like they don’t fit in with the rest of the gym-goers. Some even said they are conscious of the fact that people “may look at me,” further adding to the tension felt when walking into the gym. Not that this is as big of an issue as the previous mentioned. The largest is perhaps that not looking or fitting the correct gym standard keeps people away from even walking through the doors.

Though it is not a bad thing to want to strive for perfection and try to accomplish fitness goals, some of those portrayed online take more work behind the scenes than the normal viewer would like to admit. This is causing problems at an alarming rate, one that doesn’t seem to be stopping soon. Perhaps the part that is most disturbing is that a vast majority of these people are at an age where taking care of their body matters, and shying away from exercise could have grave consequences. If this trend continues and people are continually wrapped in fear and self-consciousness, the future health of the world is at stake. There is already an alarming rate of obesity, especially in certain parts of the US.

A New Outbreak of ADHD in Adults

A new study showed that ADHD might be on the rise in the United States. They are showing a positive increase over the last decade in adults, especially in white males. These findings are alarming and have surprised many in the medical field, with children being the most commonly diagnosed.

There is no answer to the reason why there is a sudden rise, especially since researchers generally research the disease in children and its development over time. However, now there are more and more numbers revealing the disorder’s prevalence among adults who may or may not have suffered from the symptoms as children.

The study was published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open, where researchers took a look at records from patients in North Carolina. They showed that the cases where patients were diagnosed increased by almost half compared to 10 years ago. These findings left researchers of the disease baffled when asked to guess the real reason. Though there are some theories and a bit of speculation, there has been no link between the two found. Especially surprising was the fact that the increase was found in adult cases as ADHD is a disease commonly found in children. However, this has to do with a lack of medical attention, or can ADHD develop or evolve over time? The answer is not known, nor will it be anytime soon. This has led to a lot of opportunities to study as medical professionals hope to help with the several remaining undiagnosed. Since it is not commonly diagnosed or brought to attention in adults, there is possibly a lack of both patient and doctor bringing that to mind.

More cases in some races?

The Vice President of research at the Child Mind Institute in New York said, “Our findings offer hope that ADHD is increasingly being recognized and treated in adults, and will motivate future population studies to assess diagnosis rates and trends further.” This has shed some light on a rather dark and unknown area in the medical field. There is no cure for the disorder. As of date, it can only be managed with medication or practiced methods to relax and focus the brain. Interesting statistics about the study revealed that among all races studied, it was white males that saw the most increase in diagnosis. Though there is not a known link, there have been some suspected ideas about why there is this sudden surge in numbers cases and especially among white males.

One suggestion is the fact that white males tend to be among the higher paid and hold, on average, better jobs and salaries than any other sex or race. This, in turn, directly means more access to medical care as they receive more check-ups and can visit the doctor more often than other ethnicities. However, thinking about the reason behind the detection of this disorder comes with many more challenges. This is because the study reveals the information of those that are in the medical system. This means that of those not used in part of the study could possibly be suffering without the proper healthcare or income to receive the check-ups that lead to a diagnosis. This should shed some light on many of the problems that the healthcare industry is facing today as lower-income individuals from other ethnicities may not ever be diagnosed.

More experience, better and faster ways to recongnize the disorder

However, on the bright side, this has opened up a new window in the world of ADHD. Doctors have been able to recognize better signs that lead to faster recognition meaning that they are also able to better treat the disorder, especially after years of working with it. But where is this newfound problem coming from, you may ask? The causes of ADHD are still a gray area when it comes to research, with very few studies that have been able to narrow it down to a root cause. The main and most widely accepted cause is genetics, usually showing up among generations when wither parent suffers from the disorder. A new theory was brought up in the medical field recently when a study conducted about the attention span of adults revealed that adults only have the capacity to pay attention to a total of 6 seconds. Thanks to quick advertisements, pop-up ads, access to information, and the advances in technology, it’s no wonder that we get a little anxious. This, however, has raised other questions as to whether or not it should be treated medically or personally by making myself choices changes. Though an official link between the two has not been established, there are a few researchers that swear by it, claiming that the number of adults diagnosed is only going to get larger.

Feeling lack of attention or inability to focus?

Anyone that has or thinks they may have symptoms of ADHD like; inability to focus, frustration, poor planning, and organization and frequent mood swings might want to visit a doctor. This could be thanks to ADHD that has gone undiagnosed. This needs to be done with caution with the only available treatment, as of this time being medication. A medical solution comes with its own challenges, with many of the current treatments on the market highly addictive. With the current state of medical practices and more and more people in the population suffering from depression and opioid addiction, this may not prove to be the best option. There are some natural practices that can be used, such as yoga, meditation, and possible counseling to combat the disorder, but for now, much more research is needed. Overall, it can be a relief for many adults that have suffered but have not yet taken the correct measures in order to combat their disorder. For this reason, medical professionals predict to see an even higher rate of diagnosis, calling for more research for a better method to manage and treat ADHD. As of now, those with a new diagnosis will have to work with current methods on the market, in combination with medication for the best results.

Ebola Vaccine Sees First Approval

The world was shocked by the recent outbreak of Ebola. A disease thought to have been eradicated after its initial outbreak in 1975. Ebola once again was responsible for 2.150 deaths from its most recent outbreak back in August of 2018. The WHO just released reports of an additional 50 diagnoses from September the 25th to October the 15th, leaving the world and healthcare officials deeply concerned.

Since its reappearance in 2014 in Central Africa, the disease began to spread rapidly, taking the world by storm. Though it was mostly around its birthplace of Central Africa, the lack of a cure or a strategic method to combat it caused a frenzy of news. The disease spreads at a rapid rate and is not always recognized in the beginning, adding tensions to medical organizations set out to combat the disease. The reason behind its rapid spread is the endurance of the virus. It is able to live on in the body even after those infected recovers from the initial stages. Transmission is through direct contact between individuals with blood or bodily fluids. Without a proper vaccine or cure, this was putting healthcare professionals at risk, especially when attempting to treat a patient with the disease. If that were not the frightening part about the virus, the incubation period is also a cause for concern, as it takes time for an infected individual to show signs and symptoms of the virus.

This could be detrimental for healthcare workers who might not be aware of a patient’s infection, leading to further complications and a wider spread presence of the virus. A recent light was shed on the feared virus, one that could lead to its control and eradication in the very near future. After years of attempted developments, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced, in collaboration with the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the authorization for the first vaccine. This comes after years of failed attempts in developing a vaccine that could safely and effectively protect people from infection. WHO officials were ecstatic, with WHO Director-General stating: “My deepest gratitude is to the studies’ volunteers, researchers, health workers in Guinea, other countries and the Democratic Republic of the Congo who have put themselves at risk to ensure people are protected with this vaccine.”

Vaccine trials

The trials for the vaccine began just after the rebirth of the virus in 2015 with a rocky start, as funding and support were at a low. Once a small team of supporters across the globe was put in place, researchers turned to methods used in the past to eradicate another epidemic earlier in history, smallpox. The same ring design used in the development of the vaccine for smallpox was used in the development of the Ebola vaccine or better known as VSV-ZEBOV-GP.

However, it is not the end, and could not have come at a better time, especially with healthcare professionals predicting that there will be a higher demand for the vaccine as more and more outbreaks are seen around the world. As of date, there are a total of 8 vaccinations; researchers are developing and hard at work to combat all different versions of the virus. The majority of these have been given for the purpose of ‘research’ in the state of emergency, with many of the frontline caregivers in several African regions receiving a vaccine due to their higher risk of infection. There are a total of 236,000 vaccines given as of now, with 60,000 of those given to the healthcare providers that are in the middle of the infected zone, risking their lives to tame the spread and put the disease back in the vault where it came from.

What to expect for the future

As far as the future of the disease, only time can tell. Its tricky diagnosis and rapid spread have caused quite a stir and left healthcare professionals only guessing about what can and will happen in the very near future. Experts have predicted that the virus is set to spread, and at a rapid rate as well. Though there is no true way to measure its effects or its ability to spread, there have been statistics released that are cause for concern. For several years there have been tests on several different experimental drugs that have shown amazing results and given hope for its future eradication. These, however, may take some time before they’re ever given to the masses, as these types of vaccines must go through rigorous testing, approvals, and trials before ever been given to the public.

It seems like something out of a horror film, you know, the ones where a disease eventually breaks out, leaving those that are healthily confined to a safe zone while the disease continues to spread. When looking at the borders between the Congo, Rwanda, and Sudan, all of those that cross go through a small screening to check for fever, the first sign of the disease. This also happens at some airports, as an attempt to contain the disease and stop its spread. This seems to be working, as there have only been four total cases outside of the Democratic Republic of Congo that has been confirmed.

At this moment, there is not much that can be done by the public, leaving us tied to sit back and wait. There are and continue to be several volunteer opportunities; however, they come with a large risk. This recent approval and recognition of the first effective vaccine is a cause for celebration and should bring hope to all those that have been or could be affected by the disease. It can be comforting to know that there are measures being taken to stop the disease in its tracks and contain it along with other historically deathly outbreaks but, it comes at the cost of thousands of lives lost and counting. Those of us in the comforts of our borders should be thankful and now can possibly live a little less on edge. We will just have to wait and see.

Recent Studies Show a Drastic Increase in Severe Childhood Obesity

Is it just me, or have children gotten lazy? Long gone are the days of playing outside for hours with other neighborhood children, tossing around baseballs, playing hide-and-seek, riding bikes down to the park. Today and for the last decade and a half, children have turned to other methods for entertainment like TV, video games, cellphones, and tablets.

This decrease in activity has been met with a surplus of calories due to the introduction of super sugary and fatty snacks. The combination of the two practices by the new generation has led to the rise of childhood obesity, reaching a state of emergency just a few weeks ago.

Recent data coming from The Child Measurement Programme in England showed devastating numbers with over 26,000 children between ages 10 and 11 suffering from severe obesity. In fact, 5% of the population of children of that age need to seek medical attention. If that were not enough to shock the world into realization, this is the 4th consecutive year that the group has seen an increase in the amount of obesity. When asked about the deadly trend, Caroline Cerny of the Obesity Health Alliance stated, “Every child has the right to grow up healthy, but this data shows the stark reality is that children are being overwhelmed by a flood of unhealthy food in our environment.”

Is this an issue affecting England only?

This problem is not just an issue in England; in fact, the United States reported similar findings, with 4-6% of youth between the ages of 5-17 who are suffering from severe obesity. Europe also recently released reports that included 21 countries and found that their numbers are also on the rise. Studies also found that among all the countries that released recent statistics, severe obesity is more common among boys than girls and tends to affect those in lower-income families more than that of middle to the upper class. Though varied, the number is shocking, but what is to be done. England introduced a sugar tax that has led to an overall 29% reduction in sugar among snacks and beverages. They also stirred up plenty of debates with the most recent suggestion by the chief medical officer to ban snacking while using public transportation. None of these are enforced at this time, with many against depriving children of food, but still, something is lurking and surely needs to be done.

Drastic problem and consecuences

A drastic problem requires drastic measures in order to combat, with the most effective method of treatment for children being weight loss surgery. It is a serious disease that should be treated rapidly and efficiently as the future effects on the lifestyles and overall health of children are sure to get hit the hardest. Currently, the disorders and chronic diseases linked to this recent increase in obesity include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Inflammation
  • Stress
  • Sleep apnea
  • Fatty liver
  • Overall reduced the quality of life

All of these in combination are a cocktail of disaster, that will most definitely lead to grave consequences if no action is taken fast. There is also an increased self-conscious demeanor by children who are obese, facing ridicule and bullying by peers that could have damaging psychological effects in the future.

Do children know the difference between healthy and non-healthy snacks?

One of the main factors that seem to be contributing to this rise is the lack of education received by youth about the topic, with many children unaware of the difference between healthy, nutritious snacks and empty calorie snacks. This falls directly in the laps of parents, calling them to take action to educate and instill good habits so that their kids may live a healthy and happy life. Dame Sally Davies recently stated her two cents on the issue, claiming, “It’s the right of children to live in a healthy environment and with proper nutrition. What we’ve done to date has not stopped the problem.” There have been a few government initiatives, but still, the solution starts at the root of the cause, and that is teaching children proper customs when it comes to snacking and eating.

Apart from efforts in educating about food, there have been several programs across the globe aimed at emphasizing the need for exercise and physical activity for children. One of the most well-known is that of former First Lady Michelle Obama, Let’s Move to gain the support of superstar athletes, actors, and government officials. In combination with a fight to change the normal lunches provided to children in schools has proven to be effective through the true impact will take time to sink in. There has also been bans and restrictions placed on the types of advertisements marketed toward children, in an attempt to keep snack companies from taking advantage of the fragile and vulnerable minds of young children. Many more talks and potential solutions are in the air but, when they will finally be practiced remains a mystery.

Global cooperation is neccesary

Something needs to be done, something that finally all governments across the globe can agree on. The thing that has proven to be most difficult is the ‘What?’. The government can take action, reducing the number little by little; however, with these recent reports and a more significant number of children suffering than ever, perhaps more drastic measures should be taken. Parents need to take responsibility and give their children the nutrition and chance at the healthiest lifestyle possible. Parents themselves may not have been properly educated on the basics of nutrition, which brings up another significant issue, but nothing, not even ignorance, should be used as an excuse. Turning the other way and saying “they’ll grow out of it” just isn’t working anymore, and if something isn’t done soon, we are in for a very unhealthy and very sick future generation. Parents can start small and try to limit the amount of sugar and fats their children are ingesting and little by little to promote a bit of fresh air. Parents can even enjoy a boost to their health, participating in more active family outings that could be the beginning of a newer and healthier future for all.

UK citizen falls prey to Tick-borne encephalitis

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection that shows no symptoms in most of the individuals; however, some people do experience flu-like symptoms, and even fewer people will show some serious brain infection. One particular UK citizen is said to have been affected by TBE in the earlier part of 2019 and made a full recovery too.

Tick-borne disease is spread by the tick-bites. Ticks are small parasites that survive by sucking out blood from humans, from animals. Ticks are the main carriers of the tick-borne virus, causing the tick-borne disease, also the tick-borne encephalitis. They are usually found in warmer months (May to October), in areas where there’s woods, bushes, and high grass. They can very well survive underground and they latch onto humans when walking through long grass. These ticks are also found on animals like deer, cats, dogs, and urban foxes.

Not all ticks are infected, their feeding periods differ from one tick to another. For a human to get affected by tick-borne disease, the tick needs to be the infected one (containing bacteria, parasite or virus), and that the tick needs to be fed for a sufficient amount of time, they suck out the blood of a human. There is no human to human transmission of tick-borne disease.

When we specifically talk about TBE, we mean meningitis, encephalitis, and meningoencephalitis. They are all called as the inflammation of the brain. Nearly 10% of the ticks carry this TBE virus within them. They are also likely to have a stable home for the Lyme disease. The virus spreading TBE is found in small rodents, goats, deer, sheep, birds, horses and humans. The spread of Tick-borne disease can be from humans to animals, with dogs and ruminants being the foremost spreading species.

There are three types of TBE virus:

  1. Spring and Summer encephalitis, people who get affected in spring, summer and early autumn
  2. European- eastern, central and northern parts of Europe
  3. Siberian- found in Siberia

TBE is a huge concern for mainland Europe (eastern, central, and northern countries) since it has reported the greatest number of cases in the last three decades. It is also found extensively in some parts of Asia. But the UK was never welcome to it. Nearly 1000s of cases are reported in Europe. They say, some migratory birds have become infected with the Tick-borne disease and have carried them to the UK in parts called Thetford Forest, the eastern part of England, Norfolk, and the border formed between the southern portions of Hampshire and Dorset.

In 2017, nearly more than 3000 cases of TBE were reported in Europe, of which nine were said to be the fatal ones. Public Health England (PHE) says, due to an increase in the outdoor pursuits along with the climatic change in Europe, there has been an extensive increase in the number of tick-borne disease cases.

All the people residing in the UK have been warned about the TBE. They have been advised by the local doctors about the ‘low risk’ they carry while walking through long grass, marshy lands, forests, rural areas, riverside meadows, brushwood, shrublands, parks, woodlands, and moorlands. The highest risk is for the people who go camping and hiking in the forest areas located at a higher altitude like 1500 mts. There’s a vaccine available for Tick-borne encephalitis. The doctors say they still need to work further on discovering the spread, and they pose a low risk to the general public in the UK. All the people traveling from tick-prone areas to non-tick-prone areas should be vaccinated if they are going to extensively travel to outdoor places.

What are the symptoms you will experience when you have a tick-borne disease bite?

  1. Mild fever
  2. Weakness
  3. Headache
  4. Nausea and Vomiting
  5. Muscular pain

These symptoms usually resolve within one week.

After one week, the individual shows brain-related or neurological symptoms where meningitis, encephalitis, and meningoencephalitis come into the picture.

Symptoms include:

  1. Tremors
  2. Seizures
  3. Neck stiffness
  4. Headache
  5. Nausea
  6. Impaired consciousness
  7. Poor coordination
  8. Personality changes
  9. Psychosis
  10. At times, so fatal, 1 – 2 % mortality results, with deaths occurring within 5-7 days.

Symptoms to look out for in animals:

  1. Lethargy
  2. Refusal to eat
  3. Breathing problems

Long-term neurological, along with neuropsychiatric complications, are exhibited in the ones affected with TBE.

How is the diagnosis confirmed of tick-borne encephalitis?

  1. Confirmation of specific IgM and IgG antibodies through a blood test
  2. Cerebrospinal fluid shows the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies through a lumbar puncture, also called as a spinal tap
  3. Rarely, PCR is used to detect especially when the individual is showing clinical symptoms
  4. CT scan and MRI scan can show the presence of specific encephalitis

Precautions to help control tick-borne diseases:

  1. Covering your skin when you travel to tick-prone areas by wearing long trousers/sleeves
  2. Using insect repellents
  3. Getting vaccinated in tick-prone areas
  4. Remove the attached ticks as soon as possible with the help of tweezers
  5. It is advised to avoid unpasteurized milk as goat’s milk may contain ticks
  6. Regularly check your hair, clothes for ticks in case you have been to endemic areas prone to ticks
  7. Wearing light-colored clothes may help you spot ticks and get rid of them easily
  8. Treat your clothes with insecticides like permethrin
  9. If you find a tick on your body or clothes, remove it as soon as possible
  10. Avoid touching the tick once you have caught it, as it may spill the stomach contents onto your affected area of skin and cause you to get infected

Treatment of TBE:

There is no cure to TBE, unfortunately. Only there is symptomatic relief which can be given to people with the presenting symptoms. Supportive or palliative therapy can be given to individuals based upon the severity of the TBE case. There may be a requirement for respiratory support in case of respiratory problems.
